The Clyde Exposed

We are a concerned group of anglers who fish the River Clyde and are shocked at the way the fishings in some areas are managed or should we say not managed. Poaching is a major problem yet anything we report seems to fall on deaf ears. The Crown Estates who own most of the salmon fishings have failed the River Clyde by allowing some of their tennents such as the Avon Angling Club (AAC) and the United Clyde Angling Protective Association Ltd(U.C.A.P.A.Ltd) to control the salmon lease but yet break the terms and conditions of said lease namely failing to prevent poaching. Over the next few weeks we the 'Grass Carp' will attempt to expose all of the nonesense that has gone on and which we feel has held a great river from becoming a premier salmon fishery. We will demonstrate how the Crown Estates and the Scottish Executive have sat on the fence and allowed one angling association to bully others. We will direct you to various web sites where evidence of the underhand tactics of U.C.A.P.A.Ltd This site is dedicated to all of the anglers who care but who are not listened to, perhaps now that everything is being made public those in charge might get off the proverbial fence and do the job they are paid to do!!!! We ask that anyone with any evidence of poaching or failure of an association to protect the fish please let us know and we will petition those who should be doing something about it and request written replies.

The simple answers to Tom McGregors article

Tom refers to some confusion in regards to has the right to fish the Upper Avon and we note that John Limerick was quick to point out that holders of migratory permits for the Avon can fish for the lesser species. The fact is they have the right to take the lesser species i.e. if lets say a brown trout is hooked while fishing for salmon and it is within season it may be retained. Mr Limerick should check out his legislation being an ex police sergeant. Given the fact that the Avon Angling Club continually refute the fact that migratory fish are above Ferniegair Weir none of their migratory permit holders should be fishing in the upper reaches.
Tom also mentions the fact that some salmon may have been caught by anglers fishing for grayling in lower reaches of the Avon and he is sure that they were all returned we can assure you they were not.
Tom then takes a trip down memory lane and mentions how anglers were all friends and goes on about the rift in the Avon. Well Tom here is how the rift came about> The AAC had the use of Jim Bells ponds when Jim was alive and they kept their brood stock there. Sadly Jim died and Jim Tait, William Weir and John McSkimming took over the running of the pond. The AAC continued to keep their brood stock there as Jim and Willie are both long serving members of the AAC committee (we believe ex now) The lads concentrated their efforts into rearing fish for the river while the rest of the committee continued to hold their secret meetings on a Saturday at the AAC hatchery. Some bright spark decided to change the locks on the hatchery without the knowledge of Jim or Willie. Jim Tait arrived to do some work in the A.A.C. hatchery only to find that he had been locked out without being informed. As you can imagine he was very angry and the current situation is a result of the early actions of some of the A.A.C. committee.
Tom also mentions the fact that all this discontentment that is going on has come at a bad time, well Tom take a close look at the actions of the Association that you are a director with namely U.C.A.P.A.Ltd and how they have illegally brought a motion of no confidence against two men who were taking the R.C.F.M.T.Ltd forward and their slanderous attack upon the integrity of the N.V.A.A. then you might just start to realise where the discontentment is coming from.
Hope this clears up one or two points Tom and we will continue to inform the anglers of the truth. Your article must have caused some confusion to your readers too so we hope we have clarified the situation some what

McGregor talks a lot of rubbish, there has been paroquialism within the Clyde catchment for the last two decades at least. Stonehouse against Larkhall on the Avon for example. Abercorn A.C. almost finished off the R.C.F.M.T.ltd in the nineties. U.C.A.P.A Ltd have been stirring it up with N.V.A.A.in 21st century and now the R.C.F.M.T.Ltd if what I have read is correct. Tom needs to take off his rose tinted glasses and look at the true facts.
There is a cancer on the Clyde and it is called U.C.A.P.A. Ltd its attacks anything that is right and proper and festers in a web of deceit, secrecy and lies. It is time the cancer is removed so that the Clyde can be the healthy salmon river that it shoud be.
I visited the A.A.C. web page who is this John 'The Clyde' Limerick, I have fished the Clyde for over 40 years and have never heard of him. Did he get the name by falling in or is he just another wanna be following in the footsteps and trying to emulate the likes of the late great Bert Sharp?
Joe Quigley also has a lot to answere for too, all these committee men think they are some kind of god and that what they say ias law. they are simply anglers like myself who should be making fit and prorer descisions for their respective associations not printing lies and acting illegally in the name of their associations. This is clearly bringing their associations names into disrepute and embarrasing all within the Clyde catchment. the Clyde is becoming a joke in the eyes of the angling world, it is a poachers paradise. i spoke to two men who had travelled from Dalkieth just to fish for salmon on a Sunday. When I pointed out that they were poaching they became abusive and threatening toward me. I drove to Mauldslie in the hope of finding a bailiff but none were around. As I don't own a mobile phone I was unable to contact anyone and as I do not get a gratuity I decided to leave well alone. For future reference these men were fishing at the 'pea hole' above the pipe bridge up from Skellyton Flat.

not the first time Tom Mcgregor has printed an article without having the full facts. I do not condem him as he can only print what he is told by others. I also note that John Limerick of the AAC was quick to point out the facts about the upper Avon. Where was he when Tom wrote an article on the 30,000 trout eggs in the Avon Hatchery last year. Fact is these eggs were supplied by the Nethan Valley Angling Association for a donation of £300.00p yet not one word about how the N.V.A.A. had stripped the eggs and looked after them until they became eyed ova or any recognition for the fact that the N.V.A.A. had supplied the eggs.
The donation recived equates to around 1 pence per egg. That leads me to my next point which may also show the way some clubs mentalities work. the A.A.C. are purchasing their eggs this year from Howietown at a cost of over 3 pence per egg. They are bringing eggs from an East Coast hatchery to a west coast river surely this is unethical when the Scottish Government are trying to ban fish movement from catchment to catchment. What are these lunatics doing to the genetic pool? Surely the money would have been better donated to a sister association where they would have recieved more eggs for their money. Is this good business buying eggs at inflated prices from outside hatcheries? So I guess another cat is out of the bag. maybe now Tom will understand all of the back stabbing and politics that are going on.

Having read all the blog page it is blatantly clear that U.C.A.P.A. and Avon are in cahoots.
This John Limerick seems to have an awful lot to say for himself, who is he I have never heard of him before now. No doubt another of these armchair experts with too much time on their hands. I see he compiled the history of the A.A.C. on their web page and that there is about 60 years of history missing. For someone to make a comment on a meeting he never attended shows he was well briefed. It is so obvious that there is a conspiracy going on and that U.C.A.P.A. Ltd are the driving force. Hope this clarifies things for you a bit Tom and hopefully we can get back to the days of anglers being friendly. You must be some age as I am 55 and for as long as I can remember there has always been back stabbing going on more so since those bloody salmon came back.

Who is Tom McGregor kidding he is well aware of what is going on. Is this him wearing his poor little U.C.A.P.A. is innocent hat? He once told a pal of mine that he had been approached by a powerful member of U.C.A.P.A. Ltd and had been told not to write anymore about what the Nethan Valley are doing. Who are these powerful members? park rangers, shop keepers, council employees they are the same as the rset of us simply fishermen but these eejits like to hear their names being banded about. How about David Moon the Clyde U.C.A.P.A. has salmon rights for is called Moon River what will they think up for Matt Mitchell and Joe Quigley? How about Dead Waters no that already exists.
If anyone can explain to Tom McGregor by replying to his article then here is where you write to Hamilton Advertiser, Press Buildings, Campbell Street Hamilton or tel 01698 283200
