It has come to our attention that certain permit outlets seem to be taking sides in what is becoming a war between angling associations in the Clyde catchment. We have been assured that a member of the Upper Avon Angling Association had approached the owner of the Anglers Emporium in Hamilton a few months ago with a view to them selling permits on behalf of the association, at the time the owner agreed. When the permits were taken in he had for some reason changed his mind. We could not believe this so we had someone telephone the shop to ask for a permit for both the Avon Angling Club and Upper Avon A A controlled waters only to be told by the women who answered that they did not sell U.A.A.A. permits. When asked why she replied no-one from the U.A.A.A. had been in to give them permits.
The next offender seems to be Gibson's the Ironmonger in Larkhall, when he was approached to sell U.A.A.A. permits he politely declined saying that he did not wish to fall out with the Avon Angling Club ????? Why would the Avon Angling Club want to fall out with him???? and do they create that much business for him??? it looks like both these shops have been approached by a certain club and dissuaded from selling U.A.A.A. permits.
We say this these shops have the right to sell whatever they want, but anglers also have the choice of shopping where they want. Simply by choosing not to sell U.A.A.A. permits these shops are causing a great inconvenience to their customers if those customers want to obtain permits for both sections of the Avon. It means that anglers will have to go to 2 different outlets to get permits or travel to somewhere that both can be obtained.
We respectfully request that any angler out there with any sense of fair play withdraw their financial support from both of these outlets and we say SHAME on both of them.
We have also heard that other dirty tactics have been adopted in attempt to stop the excellent work done by the lads of the U.A.A.A. but we will save that for later.
If support for these two establishmnets is withdrawn do you think the custom from the Avon Angling Club will keep them open? We think not! and say this to them be BE CAREFUL GENTLEMEN your future is in our hands now!!! we are ready to go to the press with this information can you handle the adverse publicity?????
The Clyde Exposed
We are a concerned group of anglers who fish the River Clyde and are shocked at the way the fishings in some areas are managed or should we say not managed. Poaching is a major problem yet anything we report seems to fall on deaf ears. The Crown Estates who own most of the salmon fishings have failed the River Clyde by allowing some of their tennents such as the Avon Angling Club (AAC) and the United Clyde Angling Protective Association Ltd(U.C.A.P.A.Ltd) to control the salmon lease but yet break the terms and conditions of said lease namely failing to prevent poaching. Over the next few weeks we the 'Grass Carp' will attempt to expose all of the nonesense that has gone on and which we feel has held a great river from becoming a premier salmon fishery. We will demonstrate how the Crown Estates and the Scottish Executive have sat on the fence and allowed one angling association to bully others. We will direct you to various web sites where evidence of the underhand tactics of U.C.A.P.A.Ltd This site is dedicated to all of the anglers who care but who are not listened to, perhaps now that everything is being made public those in charge might get off the proverbial fence and do the job they are paid to do!!!! We ask that anyone with any evidence of poaching or failure of an association to protect the fish please let us know and we will petition those who should be doing something about it and request written replies.

i think its terrible that angling shops are refusing to sell certain permits the people are needing to boycot these shops and go elsewhere
Well I was about to take a trip into Hamilton at the weekend no stock up on new leader material and replace lost flies etc until I read this. I will now be looking elsewhere for my fishing tackle. I have always used the Anglers Emporium formally the Sportsmsn's Emporium for all my tackle needs. I find it shocking that they are taking this stance in relation to permits it is a clear case of discrimination if I ever I saw one. It also smacks of having being influenced by a third party.
If these are the petty tactics being involved in angling I fear the worst for the future and I agree with anonymous these shops should be boycotted.
I think it is terrible that shops don't sell UAAC tickets as even though the Avon AC have looked after the catchment for years effectively, Jim Tait knows what is best for the Avon. Imagine being locked out the hatchery- no wonder he set up a new club, even though he is a life president of AAC. Well Done Jim!!
Sad, just sad.
Like local tackle dealers don't have enough trouble staying in business without you trying to take the food out of their childrens mouths.
Shame on you.
So what if they don't sell UAAC permits, buy them somewhere else. Don't threaten their livelihoods just because they might not agree with you.
You would think given the competition out there that angling shops would be glad of all the custom they can get. I disagree with previous writer, you have simply exposed another rotten side to fishing and yes you should go elsewhere to purchsae your permit and any tackle you may need might teach them a lesson in 'Why not to interfere in disagreements between clubs and take sides'
yi assume that the person who is trying to get outlets for these permits is aware that the avon as a whole does not hold protected water status and as such there is NO LEGAL OBLIGATION to PURCHASE a permit for the river, only if they have morals and are thankfull for the work being done by the avon angling club might they purchase a permit
I'm afraid that the last comment is completely wrong. No matter who is fishing need the permission of the riparian owner and in many cases this is an agreement between the riparian owner and the club which means that a permit or permission is needed I believe that complementary permits are issued to riparian owners which they can pass on to friends and family to fish. There are too many experts spouting wrong information which leads to innocent people who listen to them getting into trouble.I would implore that the writer looks a little more closely to the law before printing incorrect statements.
Nice to see that the avon angling club are still active its about time they started to sort out the rubbish that is on the banks as i remember them not so long ago making a big thing about tidying up banks.
Also what about the varoius styles on the river or do we as fishers need to carry hammer and nails to.
seemingly you dont need a permit or written permission to fish the clyde, bailiffs are now giving verbal permission to allow fishing. It was reported in the hamilton advertiser a few weeks ago that a fly tying club were fishing on the clyde without permits, it was suggested in the article that the club involved should now pay for their days fishing, has this issue been resolved or can you go onto the water and hope for the best, as a visitor wishing to do a days fishing I went on the river (with the full intention of buying a day permit from bailiff or warden but was put off for not having a permit, these people do not sell permits on the bankside. i was disappointed at the time but now angry that i read what has happened, there are no signs to indicate where you can buy permits locally. i might just push my luck again !!!
